Introduction to Clinical Drug and Substance Abuse Research Methods is an online training program intended to introduce clinicians and substance abuse professionals to basic clinical research methods.

Who wrote the training program and how long does it take to complete?

The program is divided into three modules. Each module covers an entire topic and includes self-assessment questions, references, and online resources:

Who paid for the program's development?

This program was developed under a contract between the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and Danya International, a Washington, D.C. organization. NIDA paid for the program’s development. The work on the program was undertaken by Medical Directions, Inc., a medical education research and publishing company located in Tucson, Arizona. As part of its subcontract with Danya and Danya’s contract with NIDA, Medical Directions, Inc. owns the rights to this program.

What are the program’s learning objectives?

The learning objectives of this program are to help you:
  • Evaluate the benefits of alternative investigative approaches for answering important questions in drug abuse evaluation and treatment.
  • Define the proper levels of measurement and appropriate statistical methods for a clinical study.
  • Address common problems in data collection and analysis.
  • Anticipate key human subjects and ethical issues that arise in drug abuse studies.
  • Interpret findings from the drug abuse research literature and prepare a clinical research proposal.
  • Prepare research findings for internal distribution or publication in the peer reviewed literature.
  • Recognize drug addiction as a cyclical, chronic disease.
  • Understand and describe the brain circuits that are affected by addicting drugs, and explain to others the effects of major classes of addicting drugs on brain neurotransmitters.
  • Utilize new pharmacologic treatments to manage persons with drug addiction.

How do you use the program and get a CME certificate?

The training program can be completed entirely online. You can enter any module, pause your progress, and continue working later.

Access to the program is free. We ask you to register so we can:

  • Track your progress through the modules in order to issue a completion certificate,
  • Send you periodic updates, and
  • Collect data on how the program is being used.

Once you have completed a program module you can purchase an electronic certificate showing that you have completed the module. If you are a physician, your certificate will show that you have earned AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. You can also receive a single certificate by waiting to purchase the certificate until you complete all three modules.

You do not have to purchase your certificate immediately. We will keep a record of your work and you can return later to buy the certificate.

Yes. This online training program can be licensed for organizational use. You can issue your own certificate for completing the program or provide it as part of an online educational curriculum.
